Kontour Clothing

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

I had the pleasure to do a couple of rad designs for Parker over at Kontour Clothing. New line of music inspired designs. The concept behind Kontour has to do with the simple definition of the word which is the way in which something varies, especially the pitch of music or the pattern of tones in a composition. Art is Music is Composition is Kontour. Listen Interpret Portray.

Stairway to Heaven inspired design. The angel kneeling, steady to a ascend. The foil on this tee make her pop!

Tattoo Inspired Tees

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Since ink is a serious art form and there are so many different styles I simply had to tackle a couple of ink-inspired designs. There is something unique about creating patterns through symmetry. Simply shifting a shape or rotating a few lines can produce intricate mini-pieces of imagery within a larger image element. A face or an animal make take form in the linework of repeated shapes and patterns. One could spend an eternity twisting and bending the framework of design elements and forming new and fantastic patterns.

Chakra: What’s your totem? Mixture of Hindi, Native American wood block, and Japanese Ink styles. A concealed animal totem of the Eagle – Native American, Tiger – Hindi, and the form of Japanese fighter mask. I wanted to merge these varied culture’s ink styles to create a uniquely complimentary organically sleek design.

Rosetta: The Egyptians were simply a means for The Elder Ones to communicate and learn through human life and how intelligent civilizations may form. The puzzlement of life and where it all began could possibly be deciphered through this intricate design. Third eye isn’t blind.

Chaosmos Tee

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

When the mind warbles and weebles one often comes up with strikingling profound and strangely different visual imagery. This new design was a culmination of neon patterns and the spectral chaos of the cosmos, as well as a giant ape skull shooting bolts and fire from it’s skull sockets at UFOs, Zeppelins, Rockets, and War Planes. Only then has one come up with the cerebral soup so flavorful with phantoms of forgotten lore.

Delta Tee

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

The awesome crew and super awesome curator MJ over at TeeFury printed up a limited run of my Delta design. These went up for sale for a 24 hour stint so if you like it and missed it ask them to reprint. The shirts came out dope!

Here is the interview:

Tell us the background of this design.
I’m really into vintage / classic sci-fi and mystery publications such as Amazing and Astounding from the 1950′s. Among so many stories that pepper that decade there is the common “man vs. alien” theme. In many of the short stories of the era authors would describe these villainous creatures who attack the human characters from a dark abyss. It is typical for the human to see only slimy tentacles reaching from the depths and not catch a full glimpse of their alien adversary. I liked the idea of capturing a struggling fight between space man and the ever eluding tentacles.

What do you want TeeFury fans to know about you?
I’m constantly exploring new platforms and structure for creating unique and original imagery. When I started my career I was doing editorial illustration work and freelancing in a major way. Since my induction to the commercial creative realm it was necessary for me and my work to bounce around. I found out quick freelance illustrators don’t make a lot of dough and began to do more graphic work to offset the slant. Since then, the fields have merged and advertising has assisted in the coalescence. When I’m not doing client work or anything commercial there is nothing more I love than to start filling a blank canvas in the studio. There is something mystical that happens somewhere between the hand, brush, and canvas that will never compare to the plastic pen tablet.
What do you absolutely not want them to find out?
My beard grows 0.75″ a month.
Name a few of your favorite things.
Looking through a lens. The smell of mineral spirits and oils. Tasting homemade wine and cheese. The sound of a distant train rumbling through the night. Collecting antique toys. Being humbled by mountains and oceans. Nostalgia…
What are your feelings on the new Pepsi logos?
They are spending way too much money on an unconvincing campaign reface!
Do you prefer cake, cupcakes, or coffee cakes?
I’m really more of a pie man…but I dig a red velvet cake…ooh yeah.

CMYK vs. RGB: which would win the battle?
CMYK would take the title due to millions of colors and smoother grays. Hey, what would we do without the K?
Describe your favorite shirt that you own, and why you like it so much.
My favorite shirt is an old school Alice In Chains tee from the grunge days. Sad to say, it is totally falling apart and is way out of print. There is a front and back design and they look like they were Max Ernst collages or a rendition of…I so wish I could find this shirt again!

Which is better, gaming, reading, or watching movies? Name your favorite title in your chosen medium.
I spend way more time watching films than reading, but I would absolutely say that reading is way better…just less instant gratification-like. Right now I’m back and forth between Phillip K Dick and HP Lovecraft. I like to switch between retro science fiction and macabre horror lit.

What inspires your work?
Groups like Matmos, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Bloc Party, and Foals. Artists like Dali, Mark Ryden, Beksinski, and Brad Holland.
Minds like Michelangelo, Maya Angelou, Copernicus, and Mandelbrot.
Anything that takes me back in time…let’s reminisce.

Sacred Wild Tee

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

The crew over at Springleap did a fantastic job on printing up my dedication to nature piece SACRED WILD. I wanted to do a design that reflects beauty in nature. A deer whose antlers morph into tree limbs to reveal a leafy canopy above. With a colorful landscape of rolling mountains and speckled trees what nature lover wouldn’t adore this on any shirt. The words “Sacred is the Wild” lightly across the design it is sure to attract all ages. The wonderment of the wild is a tireless theme that can be used again and again. Sacred Wild was a real joy to create and the tees are super HQ!

Metal Ink MI Riders Tee

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

I had the pleasure of creating a killer design titled MI RIDERS for the clothing label METAL INK. The concept of using tattoo-inspired themes and designs for product was a natural calling for me. When I think of Metal & Ink I think of bad ass bikers and death. The idea was sparked to meld these two totally dark and menacing forces together using traditional thin-line tattoo design elements that encompass a winged skeleton surrounded by a couple choppers. The result is a superior blend of soft-hand waterbased inks on a super soft tee. Hats off to the Metal Ink Crew as they did real justice to the design when it went to print.

The N.O.C. album D.I.N.O.S.A.U.R.

Monday, July 13th, 2009

I had the honor of producing the entire album artwork and layout package for The N.O.C. album DINOSAUR. It was an extreme breath of fresh air working with these cats from Orlando, FL. They gave me free reign to pull together all of my media-junkie creative methods to bust out some sick visuals to compliment their amazing style and fresh talent.

Their debut album dropped July 4th 2009 is all about having a good time, hitting the dance floor, hitting the splif, chillin’ with the ladies and macs, and blowing urban minds with the lyrical tongue. Among the jive beats, bass, and ill-flavor you will find some soft political undertones. The N.O.C. keeps it collective with their own definition of the album D.I.N.O.S.A.U.R. which stands for: Delivering Images Never Ordinary…Simply Artist Using Reflection. Nothing better than working with highly creative individuals such as The N.O.C. which is an acronym for No Ordinary Cats.

I pulled out all the stops on the artwork for the album. The cover was fully customized using digital paint, photography montage, textures and effects. The entire outer cover artwork was created from the ground up, literally starting with the foreground buildings which I built in a very geometric mode of Photoshop. After the groundwork for the buildings and perspective was layed down I began to implement photos I had taken in my travels around Chicago and San Francisco. Once the background was there I began digitally painting the cover characters in Corel Painter. To finalize it I took more texture photos and effects such as road gravel, brick walls, neon lights, etc. It was an insane process but extremely fun to put together.

K Sos (leader of The N.O.C.) was great on giving me feedback and keeping up the link with me during the process. They were literally in the studio tracking and mixing while I was in my studio conquering this puzzle-piece of imagery. In coming up with the concept I laid down some sketches and the first one of these mock ups really stuck. Basically we wanted to do something that screamed “Dinosaur!” without being too literal. The subjectivity of the imagery comes from the idea that these cats are getting ready to blow the lid off of the hip-hop/dance scene with a ROAR! Taking that into consideration I wanted to render this megalithic T-Rex in the center of a downtown city block.

DINOSAUR Booklet Inside

The figures in foreground running from the Dinosaur are 3-piece suiters, politicians, and corporate America. Hence, the popular US political figure heads for the Republican and Democratic parties (Elephant & Donkey men). The other individuals are my take on the rest of corporate and political America which are clowns, vampires, and zombies. The fact that these old politicians who look like they just rose from the grave, are here to suck you dry financially and of your given freedoms, and then put on a circus for the media and shielded public eye made them a real easy target to nail down visually. The N.O.C. is near so when you hear the roar your either beckoned in if your down with the underground or run like a rat if your too black & white about life!

Check out The N.O.C. and go buy their new album release DINOSAUR from Skinny Buddha Records. In addition to purchasing the album through Skinny Buddha, you will also receive a 12″x12″ Cover Poster created by BeeryMethod. My favorite track on the disc is NB-1, which they titled after Mr. youknowwho…but really though this entire album is hot as lava rain!
