Artoleptic 2009

Monday, August 24th, 2009

With summer in Seattle at a status of favorably sweet warm-mild weather with cool breezes emerging from the Sound comes a rather complimentary event called Artoleptic. Live painting and music, street artists and illustrators, and the smell of enamel and latex fill the parking lot of Snowboard Connection to entrance visitors and beckon on lookers to stop by and enjoy the proverbial eye candy. I had the pleasure of setting up and doing a mural of my own as well as connecting with all the art lovers and culture-peeps at my booth with prints and shirts.

This mural is righteously titled “Belligerent Banger”. Another crazy hobo with a knack to attack another bums shack with a 45 mack. “Word?”

Tilteed picked up my Bummin & Runnin design. This wacked out character tee is now on sale on slate color AA. Get ‘em hot off the press!

Here is the interview:

Tell us about the inspiration for this t-shirt design.

Most of my work tends to lend itself to strange environments and odd fellows. This is another of my weird and semi-creepy characters who is in the out-the-gate mode.
I wanted to catch a twisted and animated look with this particular stranger. So with a little bit of ol’school animation style mixed in with a fine line contemporary genre I
ended up with this fella who looks like maybe he just bummed a bottle and is now off to his own crooked world.

Any projects that have you excited at the moment?

I’ve been in the studio at the easel for the past month working on a series of paintings called : The Agents of Chaos. I will be showing at the Snow Board Connection here
in Seattle for the full month of August (if anyone’s in the Emerald City please come on out!). Aside from the fine art, I’m working on some visuals for a local band called Captain Gravel who have a pretty rad sound (go check em out!). I also work as the art director for Defiant Skate out of Seattle and am working on a new line of deck designs to be launched next season. I also recently finished up some eye candy for the group The N.O.C. from Orlando who just released their new album DINOSAUR (these cats are super skilled mouth jockeys!).

Juggle, twist, shout, juggle, eat, sleep…I’m ready for more.

What’s your favorite thing about living in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest?

I live on the water and have a beautiful view of the Olympic Mountains across the Sound here. When I’m not working I take off into the wild and get my hiking and climbing on to the fullest. Mountains, the Pacific, and mega-tons of natural beauty are only a short drive and besides all of the great micro-brewers here those little chunks of paradise are what life wonderful!

If you weren’t in Seattle, where would you be?

If I wasn’t in Seattle I would probably be in Switzerland. My heritage is Swiss and there is an province there called Bieri (which means beer!). The name changed upon the arrival to the States of course. My deep roots hail from Bieri and I have a feeling there is an ancestral connection to some insane brew masters there. I could handle chilling in the Swiss Alps with some beers and family!

What was the last movie that you saw? Thumbs up or thumbs down?

I just watched Drag Me To Hell the other night. If I was Shiva all my thumbs would be straight up! Sam Raimi delivers like no other. I just wish he would make more films!

One super power, what would it be?

One super power would be the power to clone. If I could tap into that I could clone myself and finish all my projects in a day!

Anything else you want to say.

A big shout out to all my friends, family, and supporters! You know who you are and I’m fortunate to be inspired by all your energy!

Snowboard Connection

Friday, August 7th, 2009

A huge proper thanks to all those who came out for the art walk last night. Pioneer Square’s first Thursday was a ton of fun down at Snowboard Connection where I was signing prints and talking about process with my kindred spirits. It was a great time with free beer, music, and sweet-sweet eye-candy art. I had a great time talking to all who came by, artists and pedestrians alike, and selling some prints as well as my Mechanical Jelly painting to a wonderful couple from Denver (Thanks Alissa!).

Defiant Skate was well represented as well. We are giving away a free deck, a free tee, and a print to 3 lucky winners who will be chosen at random. All you have to do is stop by the Connection and sign up. Winners will be announced September 1st so don’t miss out. My Limited Ed prints are selling out quickly as well, so all the more reason to stop in. The show will be up for the entire month of August. If your Downtown Seattle go check it out!

Bar Flies

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Bar·fly
n. pl. bar·flies Slang
One who frequents drinking establishments.

It was only natural to make an illustration based on this widely used cliché for the drunkard who gets constantly sloppy at the bars day in and night out. It was necessary to make the scene fitting for these two down-and-out flies. The appearance of one being a little too slightly intoxicated hunched down in his sorrow concoction while the other “buzzes” on about how upside-down life is. I really picture the conversation something like, “and then she kicked me out; the little one’s a complete brat; I just got layed off; there’s a bug in my beer!…burp!”

Loiter Ink picked up this as a design for tees. It looks great on a silver or charcoal tee. If your a barfly or know someone who is, this tee’s for you!

GONZO

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

RIPT Apparel picked up my Gonzo design. Needless to say the design on kelly green came out deliciously. This was a limited run. Maybe the crew over at RIPT will run it again if enough cyber-salivating occurs!

As an admirer of the gusto and journalistic bravado of Hunter S. Thompson it was my duty and pleasure to create a unique representation of the true American Icon. An intricate part of the counter cultural movement during the psychadelic 60’s he is now a cult legend whose raw reporting on the dichotomy of America’s politicians, heroes, evil outlaws, notoriously famed, and the trails they lead to the true American Dream will forever be bound to the minds of anyone willing to look just beyond the great tide of the ego.

“He was one of God’s own prototypes: a high-powered mutant never even considered for mass-production. Too weird to live, too rare to die.”- Hunter S. Thompson
