Finger Food

Friday, October 29th, 2010

Finger Food is another ode to fancy tattoo line and one of the the bad asses who do straight body art justice. This piece was inspired by the uber talented tattoo artist Chani Murat and her dynamic blue heelers. The act of doggy discipline with a comedic twist on the reward system is the aim here. Hence the title Finger Food. Any dog owner who knows the training days can find humor in this illustration.

When I work on these smaller wood panels the weapon of choice is a few tiny micron pens. These pieces usually contain a smattering of tiny details, hidden elements, and are really all about the execution. Armed with a #2 0.30mm and #5 0.45mm micron I methodically hash out the details with a variation of lines similar to that of Tony Millionaire and R Crumb. Tying this stylization in with the tubular streamlined bodies of 1930′s animation helps create a fluidity of motion in the characters.

The Return of Evil

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Inking some new hobo-eater designs for a new series of smaller wood panel pieces. This is one of the first in a blue-line series called The Return of Evil. Gnarly horns popping out of the head and face always make for nice symmetry in such an illustration. The standard third goat-eye and extra rows of shark-like teeth make this demonic dude extra intense. Scrolled into the beard is EVIL. A simplistic yet highly stylized design. The blue-line portion of this new series is an ode to the fine tattoo based line work that I so love.

Octo Jacket

Monday, October 25th, 2010

After getting a lot of love from people on the cephalopod design Octo Coal I decided to start doing some custom stenciled clothing. The latest in the batch of Beery customs is this rain slick-titanium button-up parka from UK brand REPORTER. Shed the dankness like an asphalt seal with this fashionably fresh jacket. It is perfect for sliding over any type of clothing whether slipping over some heavy gear on the slopes or sleekly sporting it in a light spring storm. Custom aerosol Octo in red velvet/orange on the back. FUQD label above front pocket. This one and only jacket comes in a roomy size medium. If you need some fresh gear for the rainy days I got what you need. Extremely reasonably priced, so if your interested drop me a note!

TITS for TATAS

Saturday, October 23rd, 2010

I was asked to do some live painting for a great event in Seattle and had to pass the brush as I am leaving for Chicago. The great cause to attend tonight is put on by local brand Two In The Shirt called TITS For Tatas! The event is to bring awareness and raise money for breast cancer research. Fortunately I sent them off with a killer Beery print to auction off and all proceeds will go toward breast cancer research. If you cannot make it you can find out how to donate by checking www.twointheshirt.com. My homie Carlos Aguilar will be there shredding the canvas with his mastery! Come out for a great cause, good peeps, killer art, and dope vibrations!

Moto Head

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

The third panel in my ‘skele’ series started with a starred helmet grizzly cycle dude. This piece had to be simply ink on top of that burnt sienna oil wash. What is most insane about these panels and is in complete regard to these characters diabolical nature is the story of how I acquired these wood panels. When I had my old live/work studio on Seaview I had a temporary flat-mate who was already living there prior to me moving in the space. I never saw this dude except maybe twice in the first month. He worked the graveyard shift and I might catch him coming through the studio hallway in the morning. Of course I was just getting up and he was coming home and reeked of booze and stunk like he just left a burning building.

He was well contained to his room where he smoked incessantly without open window or ventilation. The dude was straight up scum and tainted all he came in contact with. So he moved out…actually we kicked him out (with notice mind you) and when we opened the door to his chamber there stood 4 feet tall what would be considered a small portion of toxic land fill! 4 truckloads of garbage to the dump, about 20 contractor size garbage bags, and a light dowse of napalm later, his dirtbag storage space was cleared. There was one hard wood shelf that was left standing. After several douching sessions to remove the thick film of nicotine I got these beautiful wood panels. There is a ridiculous sub-story regarding one of these panels that damned near killed me…I’ll save that for another post!

FYI: These panels are completely nicotine and smoke free. Moto Head is available for purchase. If interested please drop me a note!

Lycosa Master • Defiant

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Hobo-Eaters are on the rise in SF! Pumping out a slick installation for the Urban Undead show was a blast. Not only did I get to make my mark on the walls we got to do dope-ass window displays for the Zombie Rapper line and the cult favorite Pulp Street. Since my post for the show was inundated with photos from the evening I thought I’d post up a few shots of the Lycosa Master mural along with a couple peeks at the displays.

Where's my F'n wolf spider?

Ridin, high siding, low lifin...hobo!

half the line up.

Needless to say, the window displays are jaw dropping and create an instant impact on the Haight Street passerby’s and customers. Nothing says “you must buy this now!” like rap martyrs graves complete with gold head stones (bearing the tees), golden dirt and 40 oz’s. If your a fan of these kings you know what I mean. The Pulp Street display is fiendish in a very Tarentino-type way for sure. Taking a couple of mannequins, strapping a pistol to the hand, and wrapping the limp body of the target in yellow caution tape is just the spongy-inner goodness. Blasting the windows with fake blood (secret recipe) and a couple pieces of brains really set off the ‘crime scene’. When the hit men come knocking you best start pleading cause you will soon be bleeding!

thats just bananas!

Pulp Street was a perfect theme for our hardcore display installation talent. The recipe: pistols, blood, and yellow tape. The display is fiendish in a very Tarentino-type way for sure.

We may not have heads but we have glocks!

'Pop!'

It’s all murderific! If you want some gear you can buy online at www.DefiantWear.com or www.d-structure.com…

Gurude Tee

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

Working with the DELI crew is always like a family reunion. These guys do it right when it comes to sporting the latest fly fashion. If your fortunate enough to be part of the fam they rep you right by bringing the best artwork from the NW stable of artists in the DELI Art Signature tees. Upon putting together the Legion of Doom show I’ve teamed up to offer my feathery hobo-eater character GURUDE. This eater was inspired by father time, ferrets, chicken suits, tar & feathers, and explicit street vagrants.  Awesome 4 color print on super soft black tee with artist signature hand tags makes this rude guru dude pop right off the street. The bottom of his foot reads “SEATTLE 4 LIFE”. Head down to DELI Seattle or check their online shop to pick up a guys or girls tee. Fresh from the DELI…straight from Beery!

Farewell Spaceman

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

A new addition to the Hobo-Eaters series comes Farewell Spaceman. This graphite and india ink rendered piece is about leaving the appendages we so desperately need behind. It is a personal reflection as an artist who is consumed by vices, constantly relying on eyes and hands, and who sometimes is just ready to start the next journey. Floating is a feeling of elation to me and projecting an otherwise decrepit creature ascending into the clouds seemed like a nice counter balance to the mood.

As most works start as a sketch and then get layered over with paint or other liquid mediums it is tough to capture the raw fluidity and gestures that subtly occur in the first drawing. It was this that lead to the decision to show the pencil rendering on a lengthy vertical tile, also glorifying the ghostly appearance of this sky-scavenger. If you have ever heard Human League‘s track Crow and a Baby from the Travelogue album you will see a definite connection with this piece.

Skull Drip

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Mixing up a little oils and acrylics on one finely stained piece of wood can be a challenge. When not working on a primed or gessoed surface the wood just wants to suck up all the moisture. This makes painting with oils a lot like painting with acrylics. My oil stylization is kinda fluffy, muted, and has a melting feel to it. I wanted to juxtapose my media styles by infecting the piece with a tightly rendered green-glowing acrylic skully. The contrast and complimentary color palette makes this dripping skull pop off the umber back drop of wood stain. This panel was also a part of the Legion of Doom show at Deli October 2010.
