In the tradition of undead work I’ve been cranking out these past few months it was inevitable that somewhere along the line I’d infiltrate the finer art of the Italian Renaissance legends. What better classic beauty to cover with decayed flesh than the timeless Mona Lisa of Leonardo daVinci. Twisting the otherwise lively effect of daVinci’s use of sfumato into the austere clear-cut inked line work is my favorite juxtaposition and cruelty of re stylization for the best of screen printing effects. The fact that the original work has survived for more than 500 years screams “time for a zombie makeover” in my book of revelled fine art iconography. Seeing as how the painting has undergone the most extensive cleaning, revarnishing, and recorded number of touch-ups ever in the history of restoration to prolong this gender-ambiguous model I find a comfort in irony to destroy the established elegance and refine her attraction in an otherwise more contemporary fashion. I can hear her moaning “Brains!”

Fractal Wave

This design started as a reaction to Japan’s recent tsunami. It is based on a sequence of interlocking equilateral Fibonacci-series triangles that generate a double spiral. It is ultimately a reflection of the balance, yin and yang, which our planet keeps check of through nature.

Fractal Wave also emulates the mathematical equation found in the golden ratio. In mathematics and the arts, two quantities are in the golden ratio if the ratio of the sum of the quantities to the larger quantity is equal to the ratio of the larger quantity to the smaller one. The mathematics of the golden ratio and of the Fibonacci sequence are intimately interconnected.

Fibonacci sequence is proven to exist by way of fractals in everything from human and plant DNA, how our continents are formed, to even the world’s financial markets. It is a sequence that occurs in everything. It is how we assimilate beauty with all things visually.

Isilon Tee Design

I had the pleasure of putting together a graphic for screen printed collaterals for Seattle based scale-out storage and solutions company Isilon Systems. Isilon recently launched a new product this year called Blue Flame | Wing Foot. The project involved creating a blue flame vector element that was incorporated into the company’s existing Isilon Rings Logo. The end result was a visually pleasing logo iteration that respectively reflected the concept of the new products title and release. We settled on a 2 color design that was printed to the front of the tee and incorporated the company name and product title small on the sleeve. It was gratifying working with Isilon and they were super stoked on the end product as was I.

The Skinny

I’ve been working with Skinny Buddha and The NOC crew since the giddyup. It’s a solid bond and we keep one another energized like pink bunnies with drums each and every step of the way. Building an ark to carry our precious treasures and potions of intoxicating creations we set out across the nation spreading the word of sages and leaving a trail of masses screaming for more. As collaborators in a saucy day and age such as this it is rewarding providing platforms to endorse those who strive passionately with their spirited appetites and create a means of structure to grow together. Is a reciprocated, viciously beautiful cycle of power we pass back and forth so when the lacy gems of brilliance come to fruition the bounty is shared and we dine like blazing lions fresh on the kill. For we are always hungry…

Here’s the latest blast on the NOC apparel designed by the Beery. Love touch action tees blessed with the iconic NOC logo. This time around I switched up the classic logo branding the beer bottle of the C and swapped in a spilling oil drum paying homage to the South Atlantic and the BP bullshit. We love our coasts. That’s where we enjoy our fun in the sun carnage. Seriously it is an incredible force working with solid talent. Expect another explosive year…Beery Method + Skinny Buddha = 2011!

Classic NOC logo illlustrates the groups fresh flavors through letter elements. The “N” – Joint and hand sort of implying the bird though not literally. The “O” – an eye peering out surrounded by teeth: the old there is more to the inner sense and style that will hit you when the lyrical mouth lets loose and the snake eating itself (ouroboros): The Ouroboros represents self reflexivity or cyclicality, especially in the sense of something constantly re-creating itself, the eternal return of K Sos and The NOC The “C” – The lyricists best friend the pencil. A tipped bottle of booze “pour out a little liquor”! and the wave: giving homage to Florida roots.

The NOC Oil Logo boasts the same classic graphics except for changing up the top element of the C. We agreed that an oil drum and monochromatic color scheme would enhance the logo for the Southern crowd. After playing with some color ways we had a vivid velvet purple and royal blue that really made the printing pop off the black garments. Below is the muted ‘oil’ color way.

Urban Undead

It’s been a long time coming…but it’s all gonna pop off this week. That’s right, put on your desensitized eyes and get ready for the best beginning to any Halloween/horror month you ever knew. I’m raising the dead and bringing them to San Francisco right smack down in the center of the Haight district to boogie with the dark masses on Friday October 1st. All the righteous creatures will be getting served real proper like at D-Structure where we are bringing the freshest gear from the wicked land of DEFIANT!

This is a dually killer occasion as it marks the SF launch of Defiant wear in the Bay! So you may remember that zombie rapper series I put out a bit ago?…well now they are available on our finest tees and will be for sale at the show. 3 of the living dead rappers Zombeazy, Zombiggie, and 2Dead are available now through the store and online. I also printed up a limited edition of hand silk screened posters just for the show which will be for sale. We will also be giving away limited ed silk screened bandanas and prints. Not only will Defiant be giving away a ton of swag, D-Structure is giving away grab bags, vinyl toys, free wine to the first 100 guests and more! Come for the gifts and stay for the art!

Seriously though there is more. One of the main features of the show are my beloved Pulp Street characters. I spent quite some time getting those giant parade-style muppet heads just right and now it is time for the public to enjoy them at their worst. Bravern Fall Fashion Event

I had a blast working my booth over at The Bravern in Bellevue this past weekend. The event “Fall for Fashion” at The Bravern was a smattering of visual artists, fashionistas, media, and those who prefer champagne as the beverage of choice. I showed out with a ton of prints, my own limited apparel line, and customized tees and tote bags for the masses. I ended up doing a ton of stencils for the custom tee shirts. A percentage of the sales went to the Sunflower Children charity. It was a really great event and an even better cause to perform for. Fellow street artists Solace and Weirdo were there to bring the flavor as well.

A special thanks to Ian, Kat, Kristie, Hope, the Sunflower Children, and the entire Bravern crew for all your assistance. Oh, and thank you sun for showing up as well!

Screen Printing Zombie Rappers

I decided it was necessary to show a bit of the process involved when screen printing posters. For my Urban Undead SF show Oct 1 2010 and a variety of shows around Seattle I hand silk screened 60 posters as well as a limited number of wood panels. If your unfamiliar with the process of screen printing I suggest doing a web search as it is a bit too much info to plug it all in here. Although, the shots below will give you an idea of how I accomplish large 1 color oversize signature art posters.

Stone Temple Pilots

My teenage years took place in the midst of the grunge deluge during the 90′s. Needless to say that the music of the time had an adverse affect on me then and a rippling effect on me now. STP was one of those emerging bands that although more L.A. had that Seattle sound of the time. They merged in with the likes of Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains quite effectively. Many o’boyhood memories occurred with the perpetuating soundtrack backdrop of Stone Temple Pilots and I still listen to their pop-refined ear medicine today. So when contacted through the band’s merchandising company to do some design work for the band I damn near blew a valve right outta my brain pan! I was like “hell yeah, what’s the direction?”. The band wanted something psychedelic and that was all I needed to hear. After sending them a few mock ups I decided to work out one of the psychedelic-posteresque concepts I had roaming through the gray matter. What you see below is a near finalized version of the Oracle design I began for the band.

Working with any band on covers, collaterals, and designs takes quite a bit of time. Not just on the creation aspect, but in just getting in touch and hearing back from such superstars. It took a while for them to finally get back with me about the design. It appears as though they may not be using this one on the merchandise as planned, but it was a hell of a lot of fun dishing out some psychedelic throw back material for one of my all time favorite rock bands!
