Scavenge Tee

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

“The dark winged scavenger sits atop the gnarled tree overlooking the remains of a carrion meal.” Teextile picked up this design to be printed for a limited run. The sharp contrast of black on silver really compliments the  shadowy tones of this semi-morbid creature drawing. Fact: (Did you know?) Vulture stomach acid is exceptionally corrosive, allowing them to safely digest putrid carcasses infected with Botulinum toxin, hog cholera, and anthrax bacteria that would be lethal to other scavengers. This also enables them to use their reeking, corrosive vomit as a defensive projectile when threatened. A group of vultures is called a venue when they are on the ground, but they are called a kettle when they are in the air. Imagine a kettle of vultures vomiting corrosive stomach acid over a mass paper-mâché parade!

Here is the interview:

Tell us about the inspiration for this t-shirt design.

Most of my work tends to lend itself to strange environments and odd fellows. This is another of my weird and semi-creepy characters who is in the out-the-gate mode.
I wanted to catch a twisted and animated look with this particular stranger. So with a little bit of ol’school animation style mixed in with a fine line contemporary genre I
ended up with this fella who looks like maybe he just bummed a bottle and is now off to his own crooked world.

Any projects that have you excited at the moment?

I’ve been in the studio at the easel for the past month working on a series of paintings called : The Agents of Chaos. I will be showing at the Snow Board Connection here
in Seattle for the full month of August (if anyone’s in the Emerald City please come on out!). Aside from the fine art, I’m working on some visuals for a local band called Captain Gravel who have a pretty rad sound (go check em out!). I also work as the art director for Defiant Skate out of Seattle and am working on a new line of deck designs to be launched next season. I also recently finished up some eye candy for the group The N.O.C. from Orlando who just released their new album DINOSAUR (these cats are super skilled mouth jockeys!).

Juggle, twist, shout, juggle, eat, sleep…I’m ready for more.

What’s your favorite thing about living in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest?

I live on the water and have a beautiful view of the Olympic Mountains across the Sound here. When I’m not working I take off into the wild and get my hiking and climbing on to the fullest. Mountains, the Pacific, and mega-tons of natural beauty are only a short drive and besides all of the great micro-brewers here those little chunks of paradise are what life wonderful!

If you weren’t in Seattle, where would you be?

If I wasn’t in Seattle I would probably be in Switzerland. My heritage is Swiss and there is an province there called Bieri (which means beer!). The name changed upon the arrival to the States of course. My deep roots hail from Bieri and I have a feeling there is an ancestral connection to some insane brew masters there. I could handle chilling in the Swiss Alps with some beers and family!

What was the last movie that you saw? Thumbs up or thumbs down?

I just watched Drag Me To Hell the other night. If I was Shiva all my thumbs would be straight up! Sam Raimi delivers like no other. I just wish he would make more films!

One super power, what would it be?

One super power would be the power to clone. If I could tap into that I could clone myself and finish all my projects in a day!

Anything else you want to say.

A big shout out to all my friends, family, and supporters! You know who you are and I’m fortunate to be inspired by all your energy!

GONZO

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

RIPT Apparel picked up my Gonzo design. Needless to say the design on kelly green came out deliciously. This was a limited run. Maybe the crew over at RIPT will run it again if enough cyber-salivating occurs!

As an admirer of the gusto and journalistic bravado of Hunter S. Thompson it was my duty and pleasure to create a unique representation of the true American Icon. An intricate part of the counter cultural movement during the psychadelic 60’s he is now a cult legend whose raw reporting on the dichotomy of America’s politicians, heroes, evil outlaws, notoriously famed, and the trails they lead to the true American Dream will forever be bound to the minds of anyone willing to look just beyond the great tide of the ego.

“He was one of God’s own prototypes: a high-powered mutant never even considered for mass-production. Too weird to live, too rare to die.”- Hunter S. Thompson

Kontour Clothing

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

I had the pleasure to do a couple of rad designs for Parker over at Kontour Clothing. New line of music inspired designs. The concept behind Kontour has to do with the simple definition of the word which is the way in which something varies, especially the pitch of music or the pattern of tones in a composition. Art is Music is Composition is Kontour. Listen Interpret Portray.

Stairway to Heaven inspired design. The angel kneeling, steady to a ascend. The foil on this tee make her pop!

Tattoo Inspired Tees

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Since ink is a serious art form and there are so many different styles I simply had to tackle a couple of ink-inspired designs. There is something unique about creating patterns through symmetry. Simply shifting a shape or rotating a few lines can produce intricate mini-pieces of imagery within a larger image element. A face or an animal make take form in the linework of repeated shapes and patterns. One could spend an eternity twisting and bending the framework of design elements and forming new and fantastic patterns.

Chakra: What’s your totem? Mixture of Hindi, Native American wood block, and Japanese Ink styles. A concealed animal totem of the Eagle – Native American, Tiger – Hindi, and the form of Japanese fighter mask. I wanted to merge these varied culture’s ink styles to create a uniquely complimentary organically sleek design.

Rosetta: The Egyptians were simply a means for The Elder Ones to communicate and learn through human life and how intelligent civilizations may form. The puzzlement of life and where it all began could possibly be deciphered through this intricate design. Third eye isn’t blind.

Chaosmos Tee

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

When the mind warbles and weebles one often comes up with strikingling profound and strangely different visual imagery. This new design was a culmination of neon patterns and the spectral chaos of the cosmos, as well as a giant ape skull shooting bolts and fire from it’s skull sockets at UFOs, Zeppelins, Rockets, and War Planes. Only then has one come up with the cerebral soup so flavorful with phantoms of forgotten lore.

Here is the interview:

Tell us the background of this design.
I’m really into vintage / classic sci-fi and mystery publications such as Amazing and Astounding from the 1950’s. Among so many stories that pepper that decade there is the common “man vs. alien” theme. In many of the short stories of the era authors would describe these villainous creatures who attack the human characters from a dark abyss. It is typical for the human to see only slimy tentacles reaching from the depths and not catch a full glimpse of their alien adversary. I liked the idea of capturing a struggling fight between space man and the ever eluding tentacles.

What do you want TeeFury fans to know about you?
I’m constantly exploring new platforms and structure for creating unique and original imagery. When I started my career I was doing editorial illustration work and freelancing in a major way. Since my induction to the commercial creative realm it was necessary for me and my work to bounce around. I found out quick freelance illustrators don’t make a lot of dough and began to do more graphic work to offset the slant. Since then, the fields have merged and advertising has assisted in the coalescence. When I’m not doing client work or anything commercial there is nothing more I love than to start filling a blank canvas in the studio. There is something mystical that happens somewhere between the hand, brush, and canvas that will never compare to the plastic pen tablet.
What do you absolutely not want them to find out?
My beard grows 0.75″ a month.
Name a few of your favorite things.
Looking through a lens. The smell of mineral spirits and oils. Tasting homemade wine and cheese. The sound of a distant train rumbling through the night. Collecting antique toys. Being humbled by mountains and oceans. Nostalgia…
What are your feelings on the new Pepsi logos?
They are spending way too much money on an unconvincing campaign reface!
Do you prefer cake, cupcakes, or coffee cakes?
I’m really more of a pie man…but I dig a red velvet cake…ooh yeah.

CMYK vs. RGB: which would win the battle?
CMYK would take the title due to millions of colors and smoother grays. Hey, what would we do without the K?
Describe your favorite shirt that you own, and why you like it so much.
My favorite shirt is an old school Alice In Chains tee from the grunge days. Sad to say, it is totally falling apart and is way out of print. There is a front and back design and they look like they were Max Ernst collages or a rendition of…I so wish I could find this shirt again!

Which is better, gaming, reading, or watching movies? Name your favorite title in your chosen medium.
I spend way more time watching films than reading, but I would absolutely say that reading is way better…just less instant gratification-like. Right now I’m back and forth between Phillip K Dick and HP Lovecraft. I like to switch between retro science fiction and macabre horror lit.

What inspires your work?
Groups like Matmos, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Bloc Party, and Foals. Artists like Dali, Mark Ryden, Beksinski, and Brad Holland.
Minds like Michelangelo, Maya Angelou, Copernicus, and Mandelbrot.
Anything that takes me back in time…let’s reminisce.

Metal Ink MI Riders Tee

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

I had the pleasure of creating a killer design titled MI RIDERS for the clothing label METAL INK. The concept of using tattoo-inspired themes and designs for product was a natural calling for me. When I think of Metal & Ink I think of bad ass bikers and death. The idea was sparked to meld these two totally dark and menacing forces together using traditional thin-line tattoo design elements that encompass a winged skeleton surrounded by a couple choppers. The result is a superior blend of soft-hand waterbased inks on a super soft tee. Hats off to the Metal Ink Crew as they did real justice to the design when it went to print.
